A minimum of 13 individuals lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an prompt pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
