Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, targets the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
