Pentagon Report Finds Defense Secretary Placed Troops in Jeopardy with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Department of Defense review has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by sharing classified information in a private Signal group, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Incident

The chat group in dispute included particulars about a planned air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This chat came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other officials in the group allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not authorized for transmitting classified information.

Serious Threat to Forces

The internal investigation found that the information circulated by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the safety of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

Notably, the document acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the information he shared, though it was unclear whether he formally exercised that authority.

Secretary's Reaction

The informed individual said that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed information that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the mission. He added that he had the right to declassify material and considered the inspector general to be partisan.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been shared with Congress. An unclassified version is anticipated to be made public in the coming days.
