The platform is rolling out a new feature that permits them to lessen the amount of AI-made media appearing in their streams. This move comes as the service revealed that it currently hosts over 1 billion AI videos.
Trial and Implementation
This change is being tested over the next few weeks before a global launch. This shift coincides with a surge in AI content, fueled by recent content generation software.
AI Content on Other Platforms
Recent reports that approximately one in 10 of the quickest rising content creators on a popular video site exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this material is considered mass-produced AI material, a phrase for inferior, mass-produced content that is typically absurd or dreamlike.
“We know from our community that many people enjoy content created using AI tools, including computer-generated images to informative clips, and we aim to give people the ability to adjust the amount of that, according to their own choices,” stated a spokesperson.
AI on the Platform
The platform shared that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its service identified as artificially created. Overall, more than 100 million videos are uploaded to the service each day, making AI content a minor portion of its total content library.
How to Adjust Settings
Users will be able to limit or boost the volume of AI content they watch by using the topic control setting in the app and selecting AI-made media. Further subjects that can already be adjusted under the filter include news, fashion, cosmetics, and dance.
Content Labeling and Policies
Its rules require content makers to label “realistic” AI-made content, and it forbids dangerous AI impersonations of well-known individuals or emergencies. Any authentic-looking artificial content that is not labeled can be taken down under its terms of service.
Furthermore, the app will from now on apply an “AI-made” label to content created with its proprietary AI systems, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing artificial media. This action is designed to stop users from attempting to evade the tagging system.
AI Literacy Programs
TikTok is furthermore launching a two million dollar educational fund for experts and groups to produce learning resources about ethical AI use. This project will assist educational bodies dedicated to educating computer science.
Content Safety Approach
The platform has justified its moderation strategy, following controversy over plans to lay off a large number of review team members in Britain. It is planning to cut 439 jobs in its trust and safety division in the UK capital, with worker representatives and internet security professionals raising concerns that staff are being displaced by machine-led review.
A trust and safety lead stated that people-led review would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by removing the most graphic content before it has to be seen by humans. The company stated a notable drop in explicit and harmful content seen by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to intervention by its automated systems.
“We think that it’s essential to integrate people and machines to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to reduce exposure to unsafe media as quickly as possible, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is making a difference operate efficiently.”
